Chicken Broth / Meat Broth
6 months and up
⚡ Quick answer
Homemade, SALT-FREE chicken/meat broth can be used from 6 months to cook and thin meals; on its own it is not nutritious, and ready-made bouillon/tablet soups are not given to babies because of their high salt.
How to serve it by age?
Salt-free homemade meat/chicken broth is used in small amounts to thin and cook vegetable or grain purees.
As cooking liquid for soups and dishes; it does not replace a drink, the main fluid is still breast milk/formula.
Can be used in low-salt family soups; still add salt late and sparingly.
🫁 Choking risk and safe serving
Strained broth poses no choking risk; however, small bone fragments that get into it are dangerous — always pass it through a fine strainer.
📌 Watch out for these
- Ready-made bouillon cubes, tablet/powder soups, and packaged broth contain very high salt — do not give them to babies.
- Do not think of broth like water; its nutritional value is low, and it should not fill the stomach and replace the actual meal.
- Skim off the fat and foam that form while boiling; strain the broth to remove bone and cartilage fragments.
