Tahini and Sesame

6 months and up

⚡ Quick answer

Sesame is an important allergen, but delaying it offers no protection: from 6 months onward, tahini can be introduced in small amounts spread/mixed THINLY; mixing it with grape molasses is not recommended before 1 year (sugar).

How to serve it by age?

6-8 months

Mix half a teaspoon of tahini thoroughly into puree/yogurt.

9-11 months

It can be spread very thinly on bread.

12+ months

Tahini with grape molasses only after 1 year and infrequently (sugar load).

⚠️ Allergen information

Sesame is an increasingly recognized allergen: do the first trial on its own, in a small amount; see a doctor for hives/vomiting/swelling.

🫁 Choking risk and safe serving

Thick tahini can stick to the palate in a clump: thin it out and mix it into yogurt/puree.

📌 Watch out for these

  • Whole sesame seeds are not suitable for an allergy trial — use tahini (the ground form).
