Pistachio
6 months and up
⚡ Quick answer
Pistachio can be given from 6 months as smooth butter or ground powder; the shell must be completely removed, and whole nuts should not be given until 4-5 years of age because of the choking risk.
How to serve it by age?
Grind shelled, unsalted pistachio very finely (to a powder consistency) and mix it into yogurt, vegetable puree or porridge.
Mix a small amount of unsweetened plain pistachio butter thinly into fruit puree or yogurt; keep the consistency runny.
Spread smooth pistachio butter thinly onto soft bread or fruit; whole pistachios are not given until 4-5 years of age.
⚠️ Allergen information
Pistachio is a tree nut allergen, and because it is in the same family as cashew it can often cause a reaction together with it. Start on its own, in a small amount, and watch for a few days for allergy symptoms (rash, vomiting, swelling, wheezing); in babies with a known cashew allergy, consult a doctor before giving it.
🫁 Choking risk and safe serving
A whole pistachio nut is hard and round and can block the windpipe; the shells are dangerous too. Do not give whole nuts until 4-5 years of age; grind plain pistachio finely like a powder and mix it into puree, or give unsweetened pistachio butter mixed into yogurt.
📌 Watch out for these
- Use only plain, unsalted, fully shelled pistachio; roasted-and-salted snack pistachios are not suitable.
- In babies with a cashew allergy, consult a doctor before giving pistachio.
- On the first try, start with a very small amount and observe for a few days.
