Chickpeas
6 months and up
⚡ Quick answer
Chickpeas can be given from 6 months, THOROUGHLY cooked and MASHED (a hummus consistency is ideal); a whole chickpea is a choking hazard until age 3-4.
How to serve it by age?
Well-cooked chickpeas with skins removed, as a puree (hummus with no tahini, no salt).
Coarse mash; well-softened in dishes.
Chickpeas from the family meal lightly mashed; a whole one is still not given.
⚠️ Allergen information
A legume allergy is rare but possible; start with a small amount.
🫁 Choking risk and safe serving
A whole/half chickpea is round and hard — always mash it. Roasted chickpeas (leblebi) are also not given to babies for the same reason.
📌 Watch out for these
- It can cause gas: soaking overnight and pouring off the water before cooking reduces the effect.
