Soybeans and Edamame
6 months and up
⚡ Quick answer
Soybeans and edamame can be given from 6 months cooked thoroughly and mashed; soy is one of the most common food allergens, so introduce it carefully and in a small amount.
How to serve it by age?
Well-cooked soybean/edamame beans are removed from the pod and mashed into a puree — salt-free.
Mashed edamame; pieces of soft tofu (from soy) as finger food.
Finely chopped or mashed edamame; low-salt soy dishes. Whole beans are still not given.
⚠️ Allergen information
Soy is one of the most common food allergens in babies. Do the first trial with a small amount, early in the day; if hives, vomiting, swelling of the lips/tongue, or difficulty breathing occur, consult a doctor. Some babies with cow's milk allergy may also react to soy.
🫁 Choking risk and safe serving
Whole edamame and soybeans are round and firm and pose a serious choking risk: remove them from the pod and mash them; the edamame pod (outer shell) is never given.
📌 Watch out for these
- Raw or undercooked soy is hard to digest and causes discomfort; always cook it thoroughly.
- Whole edamame beans and their pods are a choking risk; do not give them without mashing.
- Soy milk is not used as the main drink in place of cow's milk unless a doctor recommends it; prefer plain cooked soy over sweetened/salted processed soy products.
