Flaxseed

6 months and up

⚡ Quick answer

Flaxseed can be given from 6 months in ground (powdered) form in small amounts; because whole seeds mostly pass through undigested, it is recommended to give it freshly ground.

How to serve it by age?

6-8 months

Mix about a quarter to half a teaspoon of ground flaxseed into yogurt, vegetable puree or oat porridge.

9-11 months

Sprinkle and stir ground flaxseed into fruit puree, yogurt or warm porridge; give it together with plenty of liquid.

12+ months

Add small amounts of ground flaxseed to daily meals; use freshly ground flaxseed rather than whole seeds.

🫁 Choking risk and safe serving

The choking risk is low; still, because whole seeds pass through undigested and for safety reasons, they should be ground (powdered) and mixed into food before serving.

📌 Watch out for these

  • Preferably grind flaxseed fresh before using it; whole seeds are mostly excreted undigested.
  • It is high in fiber; start with a small amount and give plenty of liquid, otherwise it can cause constipation.
  • Store ground flaxseed in a cool, dark place; its oil can spoil and turn rancid quickly.
