Fish Oil Supplement

1 year and up

⚡ Quick answer

A fish oil supplement is not routinely necessary for babies with a balanced diet; it is given only when a doctor deems it necessary and at the prescribed dose.

How to serve it by age?

12 months+

Only if the doctor recommends it, the determined daily dose in liquid form is given with a spoon or dropper.

With a meal

It is usually given with food to reduce stomach discomfort.

Follow-up

The dose and duration of use are adjusted under physician supervision.

⚠️ Allergen information

🫁 Choking risk and safe serving

The soft gel capsule (softgel) form poses a choking and windpipe-aspiration risk for babies; never give a baby a whole capsule. Give only the liquid form approved by the doctor, slowly, toward the inside of the cheek while the baby is upright.

📌 Watch out for these

  • It is risky in babies with a fish allergy; fish oil may contain fish protein, so if there is a history of allergy, be sure to inform the doctor.
  • Fish/cod liver oil may also contain vitamins A and D; if vitamin D drops are also being used, the doses may overlap, so tell the physician about everything.
  • Never give a whole gel capsule to a baby (choking risk) and do not exceed the recommended dose.
