Lettuce
6 months and up
⚡ Quick answer
From 6 months, lettuce can be given; because raw leaves can bunch up in the mouth and pose a choking risk, they should be served very finely chopped or lightly sauteed and softened.
How to serve it by age?
Finely chop a few well-washed leaves and mix them into vegetable puree or yogurt; if desired, saute for a few minutes to soften thoroughly.
Chop into thin strips and add into soft dishes; if the child self-feeds, give in small, soft pieces.
You can serve as small salad pieces without salt; still continue chopping finely.
🫁 Choking risk and safe serving
When raw lettuce leaves are not finely chopped, they can ball up in the mouth and cause choking; for young babies, wash well and give very finely chopped, or saute and soften them, and do not serve large leaf pieces.
📌 Watch out for these
- Wash thoroughly under running water to remove soil and possible residue.
- Do not give large pieces of raw leaf; chop very finely.
- Do not add salt or ready-made salad dressing before age 1.
