Freekeh
6 months and up
⚡ Quick answer
Freekeh is made from roasted young wheat; it contains gluten and, from 6 months on, can be given as cooked porridge or mashed pilaf once it is thoroughly softened.
How to serve it by age?
Cook fine (cracked) freekeh in plenty of water until well softened, mash it into a porridge consistency, and mix it into vegetable puree.
Lightly mash soft-cooked freekeh and add it to vegetable dishes or meatball mixtures.
You can serve it from the family table as an unsalted vegetable freekeh pilaf.
⚠️ Allergen information
Contains wheat (gluten); it is a type of wheat harvested before it ripens and then roasted. Introduce gluten on its own around 6 months, ideally while breastfeeding continues, and watch for reactions such as rash, swelling, or vomiting. Not suitable in celiac disease.
🫁 Choking risk and safe serving
Whole or cracked freekeh grains can stay firm and fibrous; cook thoroughly in plenty of water until soft, and for younger babies serve mashed to a smooth consistency.
📌 Watch out for these
- Contains gluten; do not give to babies with a wheat allergy or celiac disease.
- It is high in fiber; start with a small amount to make digestion easier.
- Cook without adding salt until age 1.
