Iron Syrup

6 months and up

⚡ Quick answer

In Turkey, iron syrup is usually given from 4 months on a doctor's recommendation, either preventively or in cases of iron deficiency; the dose must be determined by the physician.

How to serve it by age?

4-6 months

The daily preventive dose determined by the doctor is usually given between meals with a dropper or measuring cup.

6-12 months

While the dose is continued, iron-rich foods (meat, lentils, egg yolk) are also supported on the plate.

12 months+

The decision to continue is made by the physician based on blood values (hemoglobin/ferritin).

🫁 Choking risk and safe serving

It poses no solid choking risk; give the syrup slowly toward the inside of the cheek while the baby is upright, and do not squirt it toward the back of the throat. If given quickly while the baby lies on its back, it can enter the windpipe (aspiration risk).

📌 Watch out for these

  • Iron poisoning can be serious and even fatal in children; always store the syrup in a locked/out-of-reach place and never exceed the recommended dose.
  • It can cause temporary dark staining of the teeth; wiping the mouth with a clean damp cloth after giving it helps.
  • It can cause dark stools and constipation; consult a doctor before starting and before changing the dose.
