Can a 4-month-old baby go in the pool?

Generally, going in the pool is not recommended for a 4-month-old baby. There are several reasons for this:

• Infection risk: At 4 months, babies' immune systems are still maturing. They are sensitive to chlorine and bacteria in pool water.
• Heat balance: Babies cannot regulate their body temperature like adults. Pool water (usually 26–28°C) is too cold for them and the risk of getting too cold is high.
• Chemicals: Chlorine and other pool chemicals can irritate your baby's sensitive skin and eyes.

The general pediatric view is this: Babies can start thinking about going in the pool earliest at 6 months (or even after gaining motor skills like holding their head up and sitting with support). But even then:

• Pool water temperature should be above 30°C,
• Your baby should stay in the pool for at most 10-15 minutes,
• The baby should be dried and warmed immediately after getting out,
• Pool hygiene must be carefully watched.

In your situation, the best thing would be to think of a safe and fun alternative for your baby: a baby tub or a basin filled with warm water (with support and supervision) would be a better option for cooling off.
