Teething gel for a 4-month-old baby?

You might be seeing signs of teething in your 4-month-old. It's very normal that your head is spinning about teething gels — because you need to be careful with this age group.

First, it's important to know: Using teething gel is generally not recommended for a 4-month-old baby. Most teething gels contain local anesthetics (like lidocaine) or benzocaine, and in small babies they carry the risk of swallowing, overdose, or a rare but serious blood condition (methemoglobinemia). This is why the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) and general pediatric opinion recommend avoiding these products under age 2.

Instead, here are things you can try:

• Cold teething ring (refrigerated, not frozen) — something made of silicone or rubber that your baby can easily hold and put in their mouth.
• Clean, cold cloth (dampen and squeeze, refrigerate, let baby chew on it) — gives a massage effect to the gums.
• Massage with your finger — gently rub the gums in circles with your clean finger.

If your baby is very fussy and there's no fever or diarrhea, your pediatrician might suggest a paracetamol (acetaminophen) based syrup — but don't start this yourself, definitely talk to your doctor.

In short: don't use teething gel on a 4-month-old. Try cold and massage. If fussiness increases or other symptoms appear, consult your pediatrician.
