Sour Cherry
6 months and up
⚡ Quick answer
Sour cherries can be given from 6 months onward, pitted and mashed, or lightly cooked and pureed; no sugar or honey is added just because they are sour.
How to serve it by age?
Be sure to remove the pit. Lightly cook a few sour cherries with a little water and mash with a fork or blend; give with a spoon in a smooth, flowing consistency. Do not add sugar.
Mash the pitted sour cherries thoroughly and serve as small soft pieces, or mixed into plain yogurt/oats.
You can give pitted sour cherries quartered lengthwise as finger food; whole sour cherries are still not suitable.
🫁 Choking risk and safe serving
The pit poses a choking risk and must be removed. Because whole and halved sour cherries are round and slippery, mash them thoroughly or quarter them lengthwise until 12 months.
📌 Watch out for these
- Always remove the pit, both because of the choking risk and because of the natural compounds it contains.
- Do not add sugar just because they are sour; honey is prohibited until 1 year of age due to the risk of botulism.
- Try little by little the first time; too much can cause gas or changes in bowel movements.
