Mandarin

6 months and up

⚡ Quick answer

Mandarin can be given from 6 months onward with the seeds and membranes removed; because it is acidic it can cause a temporary rash around the mouth.

How to serve it by age?

6-8 months

Remove the seeds and membranes from the segments, and give the inner fruit mashed or in small pieces. If you like, offer a small amount of the strained fresh juice.

9-11 months

Give the peeled segments broken into small bites as finger food; place them on the plate for the baby to pick up themselves.

12+ months

Seedless segments can be given whole under supervision; if they are too acidic, balance them with yogurt.

🫁 Choking risk and safe serving

The seeds and the thin membrane surrounding the segments pose a choking risk. Remove the seeds completely, peel the segment membranes, and for young babies break the segments into pieces before giving.

📌 Watch out for these

  • Be sure to remove the seeds; they pose a choking risk.
  • Because it is acidic, it can cause temporary redness around the mouth and bottom.
  • On the first trial give a small amount and observe the reaction.
