Kashar Cheese
8 months and up
⚡ Quick answer
Kashar cheese, which is high in salt, should be given before 1 year of age only in very small amounts of the low-salt/fresh variety (from about 8 months), while salty aged kashar should be left until after 1 year of age.
How to serve it by age?
Because of its high salt content, kashar is not recommended at this stage; instead, start with low-salt soft cheeses such as curd cheese (lor) and labneh.
Finely grate fresh, low-salt kashar and sprinkle a little over vegetable puree or pasta, or melt it into a dish; use very little, keeping daily salt in mind.
Serve grated or thinly sliced kashar in small portions in toasted sandwiches, menemen, or pasta.
⚠️ Allergen information
It contains cow's milk protein; in babies with a milk allergy, watch carefully on the first try for symptoms such as rash, vomiting, diarrhea or fussiness.
🫁 Choking risk and safe serving
Hard cheese in cubes or lumps poses a choking risk; grate it or slice it very thinly, and do not give cubes of kashar.
📌 Watch out for these
- It is high in salt; for babies under 1 year, keep it limited to very small amounts of low-salt/fresh kashar.
- Always choose pasteurized kashar.
- Because it is hard, do not give it in cubes/lumps; grate it or melt it.
