Blackberry

6 months and up

⚡ Quick answer

Blackberry can be given from 6 months, well washed and mashed or cut up; whole berries are only suitable for children who chew well.

How to serve it by age?

6-8 months

Wash ripe, soft blackberries and mash them with a fork; you can press the berries flat with a finger.

9-11 months

Give them halved/quartered or mashed; you can stir them into yogurt or oatmeal.

12+ months

If the baby chews well, offer whole berries as a finger food.

🫁 Choking risk and safe serving

Whole blackberries are small, round, and slippery; until 12 months give them mashed or cut in half/quarters.

📌 Watch out for these

  • Because of the hard seeds and tart taste, some babies may reject it on the first try; do not force it, and try again later.
  • It can tint the stool a dark/purplish color, which is normal.
  • Wash foraged wild blackberries thoroughly; do not give any picked from bushes you cannot identify with certainty.
