Ayran (Yogurt Drink)

1 year and up

⚡ Quick answer

Salted ayran is not recommended before 1 year of age because of the kidney load; salt-free homemade diluted yogurt can be given in small amounts as a complement from 8 months.

How to serve it by age?

6-8 months

Ayran is not needed as a drink at this stage; breast milk/formula meets the milk need, and plain yogurt meets the dairy need.

8-11 months (salt-free)

Optionally, thin plain yogurt with boiled and cooled water without adding salt; introduce a very small amount from an open cup, keeping breast milk/formula and water as the main drinks.

12+ months

Serve low-salt homemade ayran alongside meals from an open cup, limited to small portions per day.

⚠️ Allergen information

It contains cow's milk protein; in babies with a milk allergy, watch carefully on the first try for symptoms such as rash, vomiting, diarrhea or fussiness.

📌 Watch out for these

  • Store-bought/salted ayran puts too much salt load on the kidneys of a baby under 1 year; do not give it before 1 year of age.
  • Ayran is not a main drink; it should not replace breast milk/formula and water, and should not be given in amounts that spoil the appetite.
  • Prepare it from yogurt made with pasteurized milk.
