Red Lentil Purée — A Soft, Nourishing First Legume for 7+ Months
A creamy, gentle first-legume purée in which red lentils are cooked with carrot until very soft and blended smooth. Prepared from 7 months without any additives; valued for its plant protein, iron and fibre, and easy to digest.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons (about 45 g) Red lentils (rinsed, drained)
- 1 small (about 40 g) Carrot (peeled, finely chopped)
- 1 cup (about 200 ml) Drinking water (for cooking)
- 2-3 tablespoons Breast milk, prepared formula or warm boiled water (to adjust texture)
- 2-3 drops Olive oil (optional)
Directions
- 1
Wash your hands and the bowl and spoon you will use. Rinse the red lentils several times until the water runs clear, then drain.
- 2
Peel the carrot and chop it into small pieces so it softens faster and more evenly.
- 3
Put the lentils, carrot and drinking water in a small pot; once it comes to a boil, lower the heat, skim off any foam, and cook for 15-20 minutes until the lentils and carrot mash easily with a fork.
- 4
Drain off the excess liquid; set aside some of the cooking water separately to adjust the texture.
- 5
Transfer the softened lentils and carrot to a bowl and mash with a fork or blender until you have a smooth purée.
- 6
Gradually add some of the reserved liquid or breast milk/formula until you reach a soft, flowing consistency; if you like, stir in 2-3 drops of olive oil.
- 7
Let the purée cool until lukewarm; always check the temperature yourself before serving it to your baby.
🌱 Why is it nourishing?
Red lentils are a light, easy-to-digest legume valued for their plant protein, iron, folate and fibre; when thoroughly cooked and blended smooth, they can give your baby a gentle introduction to legumes during the complementary-feeding period. The natural sweetness of carrot softens the purée, while its vitamin C may help the body make better use of the plant-based iron. It is prepared with its own natural taste, with no additives. Its creamy texture can support the process of getting used to spoon-feeding.
