Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1

Wash your hands and the bowl and spoon you will use. Rinse the red lentils several times until the water runs clear, then drain.

  2. 2

Peel the carrot and chop it into small pieces so it softens faster and more evenly.

  3. 3

Put the lentils, carrot and drinking water in a small pot; once it comes to a boil, lower the heat, skim off any foam, and cook for 15-20 minutes until the lentils and carrot mash easily with a fork.

  4. 4

Drain off the excess liquid; set aside some of the cooking water separately to adjust the texture.

  5. 5

Transfer the softened lentils and carrot to a bowl and mash with a fork or blender until you have a smooth purée.

  6. 6

Gradually add some of the reserved liquid or breast milk/formula until you reach a soft, flowing consistency; if you like, stir in 2-3 drops of olive oil.

  7. 7

Let the purée cool until lukewarm; always check the temperature yourself before serving it to your baby.

🌱 Why is it nourishing?

Red lentils are a light, easy-to-digest legume valued for their plant protein, iron, folate and fibre; when thoroughly cooked and blended smooth, they can give your baby a gentle introduction to legumes during the complementary-feeding period. The natural sweetness of carrot softens the purée, while its vitamin C may help the body make better use of the plant-based iron. It is prepared with its own natural taste, with no additives. Its creamy texture can support the process of getting used to spoon-feeding.
