Broccoli Purée — A Soft, Iron- and Vitamin-C-Friendly First Recipe for 6+ Months
Steamed until tender and smoothly mashed, broccoli is a nourishing way to gently introduce a green vegetable to your baby from 6 months. No added sweeteners or extras — just the vegetable's own natural flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 cup fresh broccoli florets (washed)
- 3 tablespoons boiled and cooled drinking water (for consistency)
Directions
- 1
Wash the broccoli well and separate it into small florets, removing the tough parts of the stems.
- 2
Steam the florets for 8-10 minutes, until soft enough to mash easily with a fork.
- 3
Transfer the softened broccoli to a bowl and mash thoroughly with a fork, or blend for a smoother texture.
- 4
Add the boiled, cooled water a little at a time to reach the flowing consistency your baby enjoys.
- 5
Check that it is smooth and free of lumps so that spoon-feeding is easy.
- 6
Serve warm, close to body temperature. Remember to introduce each new vegetable on its own, three days apart.
🌱 Why is it nourishing?
Broccoli is a nourishing green vegetable that contains iron, vitamin C, folate, and fiber. The vitamin C it provides may help with the absorption of plant-based iron, while its fiber content can contribute to digestive regularity. When steamed and smoothly mashed, it creates a soft, easy-to-swallow texture for babies new to spoon-feeding. Introduced on its own, it offers a gentle chance for your baby to meet a new taste and color.
Maiyko's note
At Maiyko, we care about simplicity and naturalness in your baby's first tastes; whenever possible, choose fresh, vibrant green broccoli in season, and use fresh warm water rather than the cooking water to thin the purée. Choosing GOTS-certified organic cotton for the feeding bibs that touch sensitive skin is part of that same care.
