What should I look for in the ingredients when choosing formula?

The ingredient list on formula boxes can look confusing at first, but focusing on a few key points makes it easier:

1. Age group: The box clearly states "0-6 months," "6+ months," etc. — choose the one for your baby's age. Protein, iron, and vitamin levels are adjusted by age.

2. Iron: Infant formulas must contain iron (after 6 months, your baby's iron stores deplete). Check the ingredients for "iron (ferrous sulfate/iron fumarate)."

3. DHA / ARA: These are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids added for brain and eye development. Many brands add them, but it's not required. If present, that's extra.

4. Sugar / sweeteners: Avoid "added sugar," "sucrose," "glucose syrup," "corn syrup" in infant formula. Baby formulas shouldn't have added sugar. "Lactose" (milk sugar) is different — it's naturally occurring and not a concern.

5. Starch / fillers: Rice starch, potato starch thicken the formula; small amounts are fine but shouldn't be at the top of the ingredient list. The main component should always be milk-based (skim milk, whey protein concentrate, etc.).

6. Probiotics / prebiotics: "Lactobacillus," "Bifidobacteria," "GOS/FOS" support digestion. Nice to have, but not required.

In short: age-appropriate, iron-fortified, and no added sugar are your three key criteria. When choosing a brand, focus on these, and don't hesitate to ask your pediatrician which formula they recommend for your baby.
