Does a baby growing up in a very quiet home talk late?

A quiet home environment, as long as there's no hearing or hearing health problem, doesn't alone cause late speech. Babies learn language from speech directly addressed to them (meaning an adult talking to the baby with eye contact, meaningful and repeated speech). Not constant background TV or busy conversation, but speech directed at the baby with pauses, exaggerated tones (or 'baby talk' or 'parental language') is the most supportive factor for language development.

So what really matters is quiet, not how much meaningful input you provide to your baby. Narrating what you're doing a few times daily (like 'now we're going to bath, is the water warm?'), reading books, naming pictures, responding to sounds your baby makes, and taking turns in 'conversation' (imitation, cooing) is enough. Quiet can be an opportunity that increases focus.

Still, a standard check-in: if at 12 months your baby isn't using meaningful single words, at 18 months doesn't have at least 5-10 words, or at 2 years can't make two-word sentences, checking with a child development specialist or audiologist (hearing test) is appropriate. But a quiet home alone isn't a risk.
