Does your baby know left from right? Cross-pattern movement

⚡ Short answer: Cross-pattern movements support connection between brain hemispheres but don't force them: a 1-2 minute game where they reach across their body is enough — free floor time is more valuable.

I hear 'cross-pattern movement' exercises recommended before crawling. Are these really helpful, and how do you do them?

Cross-pattern movements naturally support the connection between your baby's two brain hemispheres, and letting them discover these movements on their own is often enough. But if you want to support them, here's how: Lay your baby on their back and slowly move a toy across their body so they reach with their right arm toward their left foot, for example. Or gently guide their arms and legs to lift opposite limbs at the same time. Make it playful, don't force it, keep it to 1-2 minutes.

The real benefit comes from your baby spending lots of time on the floor, barefoot, with freedom to move without restrictions. Floor time is worth more than these exercises.
