Baby eczema appearance?

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is one of the most common skin problems in babies, and its appearance is typically described as:

Dry, red, and scaly patches where baby's skin feels rough like sandpaper. During active periods, there may be slightly raised, reddish areas with small fluid-filled blisters or a wet/weepy appearance. As baby scratches, skin opens, forms crusts, and can thicken over time.

Most common locations (varies by age):

• 0-6 months: Cheeks, forehead, scalp, chin — eczema typically starts on the face at this age and can spread to arms and body, but the diaper area is usually spared.
• 6-12 months: Behind knees, inside elbows, wrists, ankles — as crawling begins, location changes.

Similar-looking conditions without eczema:

• Seborrheic dermatitis: Yellowish, oily scales, usually on scalp and eyebrows; not as intensely red or itchy as eczema.
• Heat rash (miliaria): Small pink/red bumps, on neck and skin folds, from blocked sweat glands.
• Dryness (xerosis): Rough/scaly appearance without redness and blisters.

When to see a pediatrician: If patches become wet/crusty with yellow crust or baby has fever (infection signs), rash spreads rapidly, itching regularly disrupts sleep, or despite home moisturizing and steroid creams there's no improvement in 1-2 weeks.

Important note: Eczema can't be definitively diagnosed by sight alone—red, scaly rashes could also be fungal, contact dermatitis, or scabies. Showing your baby to a pediatric dermatologist or general pediatrician is best.
