Baby Skin Allergies?

Skin allergies in babies are common and generally divided into two main groups:

Eczema (atopic dermatitis): Red, dry, scaly and sometimes crusted rashes. Generally starts on the cheeks, scalp, and outer surfaces of elbows and knees. It is itchy. Most commonly appears between 2-6 months.

Hives (urticaria): Suddenly appearing, raised, red or pale, itchy swellings. Usually develops within minutes to hours of contact with an allergen (food, medicine, insect).

Contact allergy: Limited redness, swelling, or rash where the skin directly contacts a substance. A new lotion, detergent, fabric, or diaper brand can be the cause.

Basic management:

• For eczema: plenty of moisturizer (unscented, fragrance-free), lukewarm bath followed by application within 3 minutes, cotton clothing. If needed, the doctor prescribes a steroid cream.
• If food allergy is suspected: most common triggers are cow's milk, eggs, and peanuts — you can eliminate the suspected food for 2 weeks and observe whether the skin improves.
• If using a new product, first test it on a small area of the arm.

When to see a doctor: If the rash is widespread, the baby is uncomfortable, there is accompanying fever/vomiting, blisters become inflamed, or the rash doesn't clear in 1 week, consult your pediatrician. If there is difficulty breathing/lip swelling, call emergency (112).
