How is a baby's body buried?

First, I want you to know I'm very sorry for this painful loss. The burial procedure for a baby's body differs depending on whether the child showed signs of life at birth and how old they were.

General Islamic practice is as follows:

1. Washing (Ritual ablution): The baby is washed according to Islamic custom. If a baby shows no signs of life after birth (no sound, breath, movement), the ritual washing is not performed; it's only wrapped in cloth.

2. Shrouding: After washing, the body is wrapped in white shroud cloth.

3. Prayer: If there were signs of life or live birth, funeral prayers are performed. If a baby hasn't shown signs of life (for example, a miscarriage at 4 months) is not washed or prayed over.

4. Burial (Interment): The baby is laid on the right side, facing Mecca. The grave is dug; for a small baby it can be smaller than an adult grave. A small coffin can be used or the body placed directly in the ground.

Health Department and municipal procedure: For the burial procedure, you first need to get a death certificate (burial permit) from the hospital, then visit the municipality or village administration of your district. Municipalities, especially for small baby bodies, may provide free burial support (shroud, grave space, transport).
