Baby excessive coughing?

Coughing is one of the symptoms that most worries parents in babies. Coughing itself is not a disease but a reflex the body uses to clear the airways. What needs to be done and when depends on the type of cough and the baby's age.

First, it's important to know the emergency signs: If the baby is having difficulty breathing while coughing, turning blue, showing chest wall or rib retraction when breathing, making a barking cough (croup), or there's suspicion of choking/aspiration (sudden onset during play) — seek emergency care immediately.

Non-emergency but doctor-requiring situations: Any cough in babies under 3 months, fever over 38°C along with cough, cough lasting 2-3 weeks or longer, refusing to eat/nurse, weight loss, lethargy.

The most common types are: Post-cold runny cough (especially worse when lying on back) — elevating the baby's head slightly, nasal clearing, and plenty of fluids help. Croup (canine-like bark after coughing) — cool or steam-filled air provides relief and tends to worsen at night. Allergic/irritant cough (dry, in episodes, triggered by house dust, perfume, cigarette smoke) — removing the trigger is essential.

Regarding cough syrup and medications: In babies under 2 years, over-the-counter cough medicines have not been proven effective and can potentially be harmful; never give without a doctor's prescription.

General rule: If the baby is content, nursing/eating, playing, and sleeping well — even with a cough, most resolve on their own. If fever is present, sleep patterns are disrupted, or appetite has decreased, a pediatrician evaluation is needed.
