Baby allergy face?

Allergy rashes are common on babies' faces and are generally shown as eczema (atopic dermatitis). The face, especially cheeks and chin, is the most common starting area for eczema in babies. It presents as redness, dryness, scaling, and sometimes crusting.

The most common causes of allergic reactions on babies' faces:

• Food allergies (especially cow's milk protein, eggs, peanuts)
• If breastfeeding, foods the mother is eating
• Transition to formula or supplementary foods
• Environmental allergens (dust, pollen, dust mites)
• Skin care products, detergent, or fabric softener residue
• Saliva or contact with saliva (increases during teething)

Other conditions that can appear on babies' faces besides eczema:

• Neonatal acne (hormonal, in first weeks, usually clears within 3 months)
• Seborrheic dermatitis (yellowish scaling, usually at eyebrow and hairline)
• Heat rash (red small blisters, from sweating)
• Viral rashes (with or without fever)

First steps for suspected face allergy:

1. Regularly moisturize skin with soft, fragrance-free moisturizer

2. If allergen suspected, eliminate one by one and observe

3. Avoid irritating the skin (rough wipes, frequent washing, wool fabric contact)

4. Consult pediatrician

Time to see pediatrician: If rash is severe, bothers baby, affects sleep or feeding, there's crusting or oozing, fever accompanies it, or it doesn't improve within 1-2 weeks despite home care.
