My baby strains and turns red, but sometimes it's gas, sometimes poop. Are these strainings normal or is it constipation or gas?

This situation is very common, especially in the first 3-4 months, and is usually normal. Babies can't coordinate their abdominal muscles yet; straining, turning red and purple, and grunting are actually attempts to increase abdominal pressure. If gas or soft-textured poop comes out afterward, it's not constipation. In constipation, poop is lumpy, hard and dry, and the baby strains with a painful expression. Soft poop coming out means it's "infant dyschezia" — a temporary phase where the baby hasn't learned how to have a bowel movement yet. Gas gets stuck more with leg-pulling-to-belly, fussiness, and sudden crying. If you're having trouble telling the two apart, the consistency of your baby's poop is your most reliable clue: if it's soft, relax, and it will improve over time. However, if you see blood with every poop or if your baby isn't gaining weight, talk to your pediatrician.
