Breast milk appearance?

Navigating between what you read and different opinions from those around you can be really challenging. Your own observations and trust in your baby are your best guides.

If you have concerns about your breast milk's appearance, here's what's generally known:

• Breast milk naturally changes color and consistency throughout the day and during a feeding. The first milk that comes is watery and bluish-white; the milk that comes later is creamier and whiter.
• As expressed milk sits in the refrigerator, the fat layer separates and rises to the top, this is completely normal — the milk isn't spoiled, just shake it gently and it returns to its previous state.
• Your diet, certain foods (carrot, beet) can temporarily change the milk's color slightly.
• If there are pink-to-red tones, it's usually a few drops of blood from a cracked nipple mixed in; this small amount won't harm baby, and you can continue nursing without stopping.
• If there's a consistently different color (green-brown, dark red) or a bad smell, consult your pediatrician — this is rare but needs evaluation.
