When is breast milk stopped?

⚡ Short answer: There's no single medically determined time to stop breastfeeding; WHO recommends continuing until age 2 and beyond; the decision to stop should only come when there's a serious health condition in mother or baby, or when baby naturally stops.

There's no medically set time to stop breastfeeding. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends only breast milk for the first 6 months, then continuing with solid food until age 2 and beyond.

But stopping may come up in these situations:

  • Mother-related: Repeated breast infections, serious health issues, using medication that could harm baby (only with doctor approval), or mother being psychologically very worn out.
  • Baby-related: Baby is doing well with solid food, weight is on track, and baby no longer seems interested in nursing — this can naturally happen around 12–24 months. Rarely, metabolic diseases like galactosemia mean the doctor must stop it.

If stopping isn't medically urgent — meaning it's not seriously harming either mother or baby — there's no rush. When you do decide to stop, do it gradually over a few weeks, taking out daytime feedings first and leaving nighttime for last, for both baby and your breast health.

What matters most: make this decision based on your physical and emotional state, baby's needs, and with your pediatrician's input.
