7-month-old baby vomits mouthfuls?

A mouthful of vomit in a 7-month-old baby (not reflux-like, but spurting or in large amounts) usually comes from two main causes. The most common is gastrointestinal infection — a viral infection that can start suddenly, last a few days, and is often accompanied by diarrhea. The second common cause is that the portion size of supplementary foods has become too large, or the baby has difficulty swallowing food in a consistency they're not used to.

What to watch for:

• Situations where *vomiting doesn't affect weight*, *stops after a few vomits on its own*, and *occurs without fever*, it may be enough to stop supplementary food for 24 hours and feed only breast milk/formula — resting the stomach is the most effective method.

• If *green-yellow bile* comes up during vomiting, it's *bloody*, *retching lasts longer than 3 hours*, or the *baby becomes so limp that they can't stay awake*, emergency evaluation is needed.

• If the baby hasn't urinated in 8 hours, their eyes look sunken, or they don't cry with tears, there's a risk of dehydration and you should go to the nearest emergency room.

If vomiting is a single episode and forceful but the baby can have happy, awake times between episodes and is willing to breastfeed, 24 hours of breast milk/formula + observation is usually enough. To be safe, if there is *more than one mouthful of vomit* or *the baby can't recover from one episode*, it's safest to consult your pediatrician.
