Why does a 6-month-old baby constantly want to breastfeed at night?

Frequent nighttime breastfeeding desire in 6-month-old babies is quite common and usually stems from a developmental phase. There are several main reasons for this:

Physical reasons: Around the 6th month, teething can begin. Pressure and discomfort in the gums lead the baby to seek comfort through sucking. Additionally, as the transition to supplementary foods begins at this time, the digestive system experiences new nutrients and may experience some gas or mild discomfort; sucking both soothes and stimulates the intestines.

Developmental reasons: The 6th month is when early signs of separation anxiety begin to appear. As the baby is occupied with new skills learned during the day (sitting, stretching), they become aware of the mother's absence; waking at night to breastfeed provides both physical closeness and a sense of security.

Sleep associations: If the baby is used to falling asleep while breastfeeding, at the end of each sleep cycle (approximately 45-60 minutes), they will demand the same condition again — that is, breastfeeding — to fall back asleep. This is not a "sleep problem," but rather the natural way the baby's brain forms sleep associations; at this age it's quite normal.

The general pediatric view is that nighttime breastfeeding demand in a 6-month-old baby is not usually a problem but a normal part of development. As the baby grows and develops other soothing methods, this frequency tends to decrease.
