3-month-old baby not holding toys?

It may be too early for a 3-month-old to consciously grasp and hold a toy. At this age, babies generally grasp a toy placed in their hand reflexively (grasp reflex), but they don't do it intentionally.

What to expect:

• Baby may notice a toy and try to reach for it, but because coordination is still developing, may not be able to grab it.
• Baby starts exploring their hands; puts hands together, brings them to mouth.
• Baby may accidentally hit a hanging toy but randomly, not on purpose.

When you'll start seeing this:

• Around 4-5 months, babies start reaching for toys intentionally and can hold briefly.
• Closer to 6 months, babies develop the ability to transfer objects from one hand to another.

Ways to support reaching:

• Offer lightweight, easy-to-grip toys (like thin-ringed teethers).
• Hold a toy near baby's hand so they make contact; you can even gently guide their hand.
• Use a play mat or activity blanket with hanging toys that baby can touch by swinging their arms.

If baby never tries to reach, has noticeable differences in arm movement (one arm moves less, stiffness/looseness), or shows delays in other areas (smiling, following objects, making sounds), I recommend asking your pediatrician for an evaluation.
