3-month-old baby afraid of everything?

Seeing "fear" behavior in a 3-month-old can be concerning for parents, but what you're seeing is usually not real fear—it's the startle reflex (Moro reflex) or heightened sensitivity to sudden stimuli.

In 3-month-old babies:

• The Moro reflex is still active—with sudden sounds, movement, or position changes, arms suddenly open, baby startles and may cry. This is from nervous system immaturity, not fear, and disappears by 4-5 months.
• Sensory sensitivity develops—sounds, lights, and movements previously unnoticed now catch baby's attention. This is actually a normal part of development.
• Baby can't understand cause and effect yet (for example, "the door slammed, that's why there's a sound"), so repeated startling can lead to general fussiness.

What can help: Reduce sudden stimuli (loud environments, abrupt approaches, sudden light changes), pick baby up and speak in a calm voice to reassure them they're safe, and when startled, immediately comfort with soothing touch to send the message "I'm here."

If baby constantly startles when awake, frequently jerks, has trouble calming down, or shows seizure-like movements—these may go beyond a startle reflex and could require pediatric neurology evaluation.
