Bad breath in a 2-year-old?

Bad breath (halitosis) around age 2 usually relates to oral hygiene. At this age, children can't brush their teeth effectively on their own, so plaque bacteria build up on teeth and tongue, causing odor. Overnight, a dry mouth makes the smell more noticeable in the morning.

Most common causes:

• Inadequate brushing (especially back molars and tongue)
• Food particles trapped between teeth
• Tooth decay or gum inflammation (gingivitis)

What to do:

• Clean the tongue gently with a soft tongue cleaner or the back of a soft toothbrush.
• Encourage drinking plenty of water; sipping water after meals clears debris.
• Pediatric dental visit: aim for 1–2 check-ups yearly at this age.

See a doctor if:

• Bad breath persists (2–3 weeks despite good care)
• Breath odor comes with fever, runny nose, cough (possible sinus infection)
• Greenish-yellow foul drainage from the nose (possible foreign object—seek care promptly)
• Mouth sores, swelling, or bleeding present
