Is my 2-month-old having trouble sleeping?

Having difficulty sleeping in a 2-month-old isn't as rare as you might think — at this age, sleep patterns are still immature, and even though babies sleep 14-17 hours a day, they do it in short chunks and usually can't fall asleep on their own. So it's less of a health problem and more of a natural part of how their nervous and digestive systems are maturing.

Here are a few things to keep in mind: Is your baby eating enough during the day? Hunger, gas pain, or a wet diaper can make it harder to fall asleep. Also, keeping the environment dim, quiet, and calm helps them understand the difference between night and day; you can keep curtains open during the day and move around at normal volume, but at night you can keep lights low and quiet to create a routine.

While your baby sleeps, put them on their back, and make sure there are no soft toys or blankets in the bed — follow safe sleep rules. Remember, this is a temporary phase; around 3-4 months, sleep cycles become more regular.

If your baby shows other signs of discomfort besides fussiness — fever, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, excessive crying, or slowed weight gain — definitely talk to your pediatrician. Otherwise, you don't need to worry; patience and a consistent routine will be enough.
