Fever in a 2.5-Year-Old Child?

Fever in a 2.5-year-old child is the most common sign that the body is fighting an infection. Fever itself is not a disease, but a natural and beneficial response of the immune system.

Generally, a fever of 38°C and above is considered a fever. Most viral infections (common cold, flu, sore throat) clear up on their own within 3–5 days. During this time, your child should be given plenty of fluids, dressed lightly, and the room temperature should not be kept too high. Fever-reducing medications (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) should only be used if your child is uncomfortable, in pain, or unable to sleep, always in age-appropriate and weight-appropriate doses, and only after consulting a doctor or pharmacist.

Situations requiring emergency medical evaluation:

• If fever lasts longer than 3 days
• If the child is drowsy, exhausted, or cannot be awakened
• If having difficulty breathing
• If experiencing seizures
• If there is a rash on the body that does not blanch with pressure (purple-red spots)
• If severe fatigue, neck stiffness, or severe headache is present
• If signs of dehydration (no urination for longer than 8 hours, dry mouth, sunken eyes)
• If burning during urination, ear pain, or cough and other symptoms are present
