Development of an 18-month-old child?

18-month-olds are rapidly becoming more independent. An average 18-month-old:

• Motor: Walks independently, tries to run, wants to climb stairs, can scribble with a crayon.
• Language: Says about 10-20 words, understands simple instructions ("get the ball," "give me your shoe"), starts using "no" and "mine."
• Social/Emotional: Clings to familiar people, sharing toys is difficult, begins role-play (pretending to talk on phone).
• Cognitive: Matches simple objects, builds a 3-4 block tower, remembers a hidden toy.

Frequent tantrums and stubbornness are seen at this age — this is a normal part of development, not a discipline problem. Setting consistent, calm boundaries is most effective. Language development varies widely until age 2, so don't panic early. However, if at 18 months there are no meaningful words at all, or no eye contact and shared attention (pointing and looking at you), a pediatrician evaluation is appropriate.
