Why doesn't my 18-month-old walk yet?

An 18-month-old who hasn't started walking yet is developmentally "something to monitor," but not a reason to panic. Most children take independent steps between 9-15 months; 18 months is considered the upper limit of normal for independent walking.

Common reasons might include:

1. Wide normal range: Every child has their own pace. There are 18-month-olds taking just a few steps who eventually walk fine when followed up.

2. Muscle strength and balance: May not have spent enough time crawling or cruising (holding furniture while walking). These stages strengthen hip and core muscles; without them, walking can be delayed.

3. Opportunity and environment: If your child doesn't have enough free movement space daily, or hasn't had chances to stand bare-footed on various surfaces, walking can be delayed. Baby walkers don't speed up walking and may actually delay it.

4. Underlying causes (less common): Low muscle tone, joint/leg structure issues, or developmental coordination problems. These typically show with other motor signs (difficulty sitting, crawling, cruising).

When to see a doctor:

• At 18 months, still taking zero independent steps
• When held, legs drag instead of supporting weight, or won't try to stand
• Lost motor skills previously had (crawling, cruising)
• Noticeable asymmetry or stiffness in legs

Evaluation usually starts with a pediatrician; if needed, referral to pediatric orthopedics or neurology follows. When caught early, most conditions improve with simple physical support and home exercises.
