How does an 18-month-old's fever go down?

Managing fever in an 18-month-old can feel confusing, and I understand your worry. So bringing down the fever alone isn't always necessary; how your baby is acting overall is more important.

Here's what current pediatric guidelines recommend to manage fever:

• Keep the room cool (20-22°C) and dress your baby in thin, cotton clothes. Heavy bundling actually raises fever — remember that.
• Give plenty of fluids — water, diluted yogurt drink, broth, or breast milk/formula. Staying hydrated is very important.
• Gently sponge with lukewarm (not cold!) water on the forehead, under arms, and groin. Never use cold water or alcohol — that causes shivering and can actually raise fever.
• About medication: if fever is above 38.5°C and your baby is uncomfortable, you can use a fever reducer your doctor recommended before (acetaminophen/ibuprofen) at the right dose.
