What helps ear pain in a 1-month-old baby?

Suspecting ear pain is very worrying for mothers of 1-month-old babies. Let me first make this clear: Ear pain at this age usually comes from a middle ear infection, and there are limited things you can do at home because your baby is so young.

Things you can try at home:

• Change position: Holding your baby upright or lying them down at a slight angle with the sore ear facing up can reduce pressure in the ear and provide some relief.
• Warm compress: Dampen a clean, soft cloth with warm (not hot) water, wring it out well, and gently apply it to the outside of your baby's ear. You can do this for 10-15 minutes. Never put anything into the ear canal.
• Nursing or bottle feeding: The sucking reflex can open the Eustachian tube, balancing pressure and potentially soothing your baby. Try to keep your baby as upright as possible while feeding.

Things you must never do:

• Do not drop anything (oil, drops, homemade onion water, olive oil, etc.) into the ear. At this age, the eardrum can be perforated, and these substances can leak into the middle ear causing serious damage.
• Never give your baby pain reliever syrup — at this age, it requires only medical decision-making and very careful dose calculation.

Most important warning:

When you see signs of ear pain in a 1-month-old (discomfort, constant crying, ear pulling, fever, refusal to nurse), you must have your baby seen by a pediatrician the same day. Only after examination can the doctor decide if antibiotics are needed and what can be done for the pain.
