Summer Heat Rash and Diaper Rash: Gentle Skin Care for Your Baby
Summer heat can be a little hard on your baby's soft skin. If you've noticed tiny red spots on the neck or in the skin folds, or redness in the diaper area, you're not alone: heat rash and diaper rash affect many babies in the warm months, and most of the time a few gentle steps at home bring real relief.
Why does heat rash happen?
Because babies' sweat ducts are still maturing, they clog easily in hot weather; trapped sweat shows up as tiny red bumps on the neck, nape, armpits and skin folds. It can look alarming, but heat rash is usually harmless. The most effective approach is cooling the environment, gently rinsing sweat away with lukewarm water and keeping the skin dry; covering it with creams is rarely needed.
Gentle care for diaper rash
Diaper rash appears when moisture, friction and the diaper environment come together, and it can flare up with summer sweating. Changing diapers frequently, cleansing with lukewarm water, patting dry without rubbing and applying a thin layer of the barrier cream your doctor recommends can all support the skin. If you use wipes, fragrance-free ones are a gentler choice.
Gentle care at home: 3 steps
Keep the room cool and airy
Air the room during the day and dress your baby in a single light cotton layer; if you use air conditioning or a fan, make sure the airflow doesn't blow directly on your baby.
Cleanse gently
Wipe sweaty areas with lukewarm water or give a short lukewarm bath; use little or no soap, pat the skin dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing, and make sure the folds stay dry.
Choose breathable fabrics
Synthetic fabrics trap sweat; pure cotton, loose-fitting clothes help the skin breathe. Short diaper-free moments during the day can also soothe the diaper area.
❓ Should I use powder for heat rash?
Most paediatricians no longer recommend powder, as it can clog pores and carries a risk of being inhaled. A cool environment, lukewarm cleansing and cotton clothing are usually enough.
❓ When should I see a doctor?
If the redness doesn't settle within a few days, spreads, shows blisters or discharge, or comes with fever and unusual fussiness, don't hesitate to contact your paediatrician.
The Maiyko difference: We use GOTS-certified organic cotton because in summer delicate baby skin needs fabrics that breathe, feel soft and carry no unnecessary chemical load. Lightly woven organic cotton helps the skin stay cool without trapping sweat.
