Introducing Allergenic Foods Safely: A Gentle Start for Your Baby

When you begin introducing solids, one of the first questions on your mind is often about allergens: When can I offer egg? Is peanut butter safe? Feeling worried is completely natural. The good news is that introducing allergenic foods in a gentle, planned and patient way can be a calm process for most families.

6 months
A suitable starting point for solids and allergen introduction for most babies — together with signs of readiness.

The most common food allergens: egg, milk, wheat, peanut, tree nuts, fish, sesame and soy.
3-5 days
The window to watch for a possible reaction after introducing a new allergen.
1
Only one new allergen at a time: this makes it easier to tell which food caused any reaction.

Why early and gentle introduction matters

Current guidance supports not unnecessarily delaying allergenic foods once solids begin (often around 6 months, when your baby is ready). Early and regular introduction is thought to help lower the chance of developing a food allergy in some babies. This is not a guarantee, but a gentle approach you can follow and observe.

If there is a family history of food allergy, eczema or asthma, or if your baby has noticeable eczema, talking to your pediatrician before you begin allergen introduction is the safest path. Your doctor can offer a personal plan tailored to your baby.

Safe introduction, step by step

1 · Wait for signs of readiness

Holding the head steady, sitting with support and showing interest in food are signs of readiness that usually appear around 6 months. Follow your baby's own pace without rushing.

2 · Start one at a time, in small amounts

Offer a new allergen early in the day and in a small amount. Avoid giving two new allergens together on the same day, as this makes a possible reaction harder to identify.

3 · Serve an age-appropriate texture

Whole tree nuts and whole peanuts are a choking risk and are never given to young children. Instead, you can thin smooth peanut butter and cook egg thoroughly.

4 · Observe reactions calmly

Watch for signs such as redness or hives on the skin, vomiting or mild swelling. For serious signs such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or lips, seek emergency help without delay.

❓ How can I offer peanut butter safely?

Whole peanuts and nuts are a choking risk and are not given to young children. Instead, you can thin a small amount of smooth peanut butter with breast milk, formula or cooled boiled water and serve it in a soft texture.

❓ What should I do if there is no reaction to an allergen?

If no clear reaction appears over a few days, you can keep adding that food to the menu regularly. Not removing well-tolerated allergens from the diet helps maintain familiarity.
