Broccoli Purée — A Soft, Nourishing Green First Vegetable for 6+ Months
A gentle, light first vegetable purée where fresh broccoli is steamed and mashed until smooth. Prepared from 6 months with no seasoning or extras; its creamy texture and mild green flavour make it an easy-to-digest recipe for the start of solids.
Ingredients
- 1 small bunch (about 100 g) Fresh broccoli (washed, separated into small florets)
- 2-3 tablespoons Breast milk, prepared formula or drinking water (to adjust consistency)
Directions
- 1
Wash your hands and the bowl and spoons you will use thoroughly. Rinse the broccoli under running water and separate it into small florets; trim the thick stalks.
- 2
Place the florets in a steaming basket or a pan with a little water; over low heat, steam for 8-12 minutes until soft enough to mash easily with a fork.
- 3
Drain the broccoli; set aside some of the steaming water or the breast milk/formula in a separate bowl to adjust the consistency.
- 4
Transfer the softened broccoli to a bowl and mash with a fork or blender until you have a smooth purée.
- 5
Add the reserved liquid little by little to reach a soft, flowing consistency your baby can swallow easily.
- 6
Do not add any seasoning or extras; broccoli's own mild taste is enough at this age.
- 7
Test the purée on the back of your hand to make sure it is lukewarm or at room temperature; your baby should always eat seated and under supervision.
🌱 Why is it nourishing?
Broccoli is a light, gentle green vegetable valued for vitamin C, fibre and folate; mashed until smooth, it can give your baby room to meet new flavours during the move to solids. Prepared by steaming, it offers a creamy consistency and can support getting used to spoon-feeding. Because it is prepared with its own natural taste, no added extras are needed. With its light nature it is a well-loved choice among first vegetable purées.
