Broccoli & Potato Purée – Spring's Little Green Spoonful

A velvety, salt-free purée born from the meeting of fresh broccoli and soft potato. It's an ideal veggie introduction for babies starting solids from 6 months onwards.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1

    1) Peel the potato and cut it into small cubes. Wash the broccoli florets thoroughly.

  2. 2

    2) Place the potato cubes in a saucepan, cover with water and cook over medium heat for 8 minutes.

  3. 3

    3) Add the broccoli florets and continue cooking together for a further 5–6 minutes, until the broccoli is completely tender.

  4. 4

    4) Drain through a colander, setting aside a few spoonfuls of the cooking water.

  5. 5

    5) Blend the cooked vegetables using a blender or fork until smooth. Add the reserved cooking water or unsalted vegetable broth as needed to reach the right consistency.

  6. 6

    6) Test the temperature on your wrist, and serve once it has cooled to a comfortable warmth. Any leftover purée can be poured into ice cube trays and frozen for later.

🌱 Why is it nourishing?

Broccoli is rich in vitamin C and folate, supporting the immune system and contributing to healthy cell development. Potato provides easily digestible complex carbohydrates, giving your baby steady energy throughout the day. Serving them together boosts vitamin K intake, which helps support strong bone development. The iron found in broccoli is especially important at this stage for cognitive development. Its fibre content helps support the healthy functioning of a baby's still-maturing digestive system. > Introduce new foods one at a time, waiting days between each.
