Baby Rice Soup — A Light, Easy-to-Digest First Soup for 6+ Months
A light first soup in which fine baby rice is simmered in plenty of water until soft and brought to a smooth consistency. From 6 months, its gentle, easy-to-digest texture makes it a soft introduction to the spoon.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons (about 30 g) Baby rice (or fine rice)
- 1 - 1.5 cups Drinking water or vegetable cooking water
- a few drops Extra virgin olive oil (optional)
Directions
- 1
Wash your hands and the pot, bowl and spoon you will use thoroughly. Rinse the baby rice in a strainer until the water runs clear.
- 2
Put the rice in a small pot, add drinking water or vegetable cooking water, and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, for 15-18 minutes until the grains break down and soften.
- 3
If the water reduces, add a little hot water at a time; take care to keep the rice very soft and quite watery.
- 4
Blend the cooked soup or mash it well with a fork, then pass it through a fine strainer for a smooth consistency.
- 5
If it is too thick, add a little of the reserved cooking water, breast milk or formula, a little at a time, until it reaches a flow your baby can swallow comfortably. You may stir in a few drops of extra virgin olive oil if you wish.
- 6
Cool the soup to a lukewarm temperature you test on the back of your hand and serve fresh, without letting it sit.
