What you can do for non-walking babies depends entirely on your baby's age. Standing and walking typically develop between 9-18 months, so if your baby is under 12 months, there's usually nothing to worry about.

To support your baby's motor development:

  • Give plenty of tummy time — this strengthens back, neck, and hip muscles.
  • Encourage crawling; place a toy they like just out of reach to motivate reaching and moving.
  • Let them pull up to standing using sturdy furniture; this is natural and important for their own strength and balance.
  • Make sure they have bare foot time — without shoes or even socks (which slip) — so sole muscles and balance develop properly.
  • You can support stepping reflex by holding them under the arms and letting their feet touch the ground, but never force pulling them up by their arms.

Baby walkers aren't recommended — the AAP finds them unsafe for development, and Turkey's health ministry also advises against them.

Consult your pediatrician if your baby is 18 months old and hasn't taken independent steps, or if they previously walked and have now regressed.
