Sleep myoclonus baby?

Sleep myoclonus is the name given to sudden, involuntary muscle twitches that occur when babies are falling asleep or in light stages of sleep. It is commonly seen in babies aged 0-6 months and is completely benign—it is not a sign of disease or neurological problems.

What does it look like?

• Twitches usually occur in the arms, legs, or whole body.
• They appear as the baby falls asleep or in the first few minutes of sleep; they disappear when the baby wakes or enters deep sleep.
• The baby doesn't wake during the twitch; rather, they calm down after twitching and continue sleeping.
• Movements are not rhythmic and do not follow a repeating pattern.

It may resemble seizures, but the differences are:

• In myoclonus, the baby's eyes are usually closed and they are sleepy; in seizure, the baby may be awake with altered consciousness.
• Myoclonic twitches start with sleep and stop when awake; seizures can continue when the baby is awake.
• Gently holding or repositioning the baby usually stops the twitching.

When to worry:

If the same movements occur while the baby is awake, if the baby turns blue during twitches or stops breathing, if twitches are becoming more frequent or intense, consult a pediatric neurology specialist.

What to do:

No treatment is needed. Most babies outgrow it between 6-12 months. As a parent, the biggest concern is usually mistaking it for epilepsy; current pediatric guidance suggests recording video and showing it to your doctor to clarify the diagnosis.
