Does the reward method work in potty training?

Using concrete reinforcers like stickers and small rewards during potty training works for many families—especially when the child is ready for training. The logic behind this is to make the desired behavior (using the toilet or potty) clear and positive for your child. However, there are a few important points to consider:

Rewards shouldn't be too large or excessive. A sticker, reading an extra story, or extra playtime—small, immediate rewards—are sufficient. Large toys or candy can create pressure. Also, the reward system should be used only at the beginning, while the habit is being established, not throughout training. A child who constantly expects rewards may use the toilet only for the reward, not because they've internalized the habit.

Potential downsides: If your child isn't ready for training (before age 2.5-3 or without showing signs of readiness), no reward system will work—it will only create stress for both of you. Pressuring an unprepared child with rewards can lead to accidents and shame.

In short: this method isn't inherently problematic; when used at the right time with small, temporary rewards, it can be effective. If your child shows signs of readiness, there's no harm in trying it.
