We've started toilet training and I'm unsure between diapers and regular underwear. Would using training underwear during this transition period help the process?

Training underwear (also called training pants) can be a practical tool for the transition period during toilet training, but it doesn't work the same way for every child.

If your child feels uncomfortable when wet and this discomfort motivates them to go to the toilet, starting directly with regular underwear might be more effective. If there are frequent accidents and this exhausts you or your child, training underwear can work as an intermediate step — it provides more wetness sensation than a diaper but doesn't get as wet as regular underwear.

The most common pediatric view is this: if your child has constant accidents when trying underwear and isn't bothered by them, try the training underwear transition for a while. But if your child is treating them like a diaper and regularly having bowel movements in them, moving to regular underwear at that point may extend the training process. Watch for your child's signals — whichever option leads to more toilet attempts is the right direction forward.
